What was Christ System of Thought?

2/14/10

Anyone who claims to be a Christian must on pain of contradiction hold to the same system of thought that their Lord and Savior held. What was His system of thought? How was His mind structured? What did He consider to be fixed, absolute, objective, unalterable truth? What did He accept as the authority of His mind? What governed and guided His every thought, word and deed? What did He rely on as the arbiter that settled every dispute? What was the basis for all that He taught? What did He believe about Himself i.e. His identity, His purpose, His mission?

Purpose: To learn from Scripture how the 5 Solas was Christ system of thought and we must think and obey the same system if we are going to yield our minds and life to the authority of Christ.

1. Our Lord believed and taught the five Solas as His system of thought. The five Solas are: Scripture Alone, Christ Alone, Grace Alone, Faith Alone, and the Glory of God Alone.

2. Scripture Alone: The Lord Jesus Christ began His system of thought with Scripture Alone.

a. He believed every word of Scripture was fixed, absolute, objective, eternal, inerrant, infallible, unalterable truth. He never taught a Scripture Plus message. He was a Scripturalist and not an Integrationist. He did not borrow any ideas from any of the philosophers or so called scholars or sophists of His day.

Joh 17:17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.

Joh 10:35 If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken),

b. He spoke Scripture Alone.

Joh 3:34 For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God does not give the Spirit by measure.

c. He obeyed and submitted to the authority of Scripture Alone.

Joh 12:49 For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak.

d. Scripture Alone was the basis for all that He taught.

Mat 7:12 Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

Mat 19:17 So He said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.”

Mat 19:18 He said to Him, “Which ones?” Jesus said, ” ‘YOU SHALL NOT MURDER,’ ‘YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY,’ ‘YOU SHALL NOT STEAL,’ ‘YOU SHALL NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS,’

Mat 19:19 ‘HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER,’ and, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’ “

e. He taught that no one should add to Scripture.

Mat 5:17 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.

Mat 5:18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.

Mat 5:19 Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Mat 15:1 Then the scribes and Pharisees who were from Jerusalem came to Jesus, saying,

Mat 15:2 “Why do Your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.”

Mat 15:3 He answered and said to them, “Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition?

Mat 15:4 For God commanded, saying, ‘HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER’; and, ‘HE WHO CURSES FATHER OR MOTHER, LET HIM BE PUT TO DEATH.’

Mat 15:5 But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever profit you might have received from me is a gift to God

Mat 15:6 then he need not honor his father or mother.’ Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition.

Mat 15:7 Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying:

Mat 15:8 ‘THESE PEOPLE DRAW NEAR TO ME WITH THEIR MOUTH, AND HONOR ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR FROM ME.

Mat 15:9 AND IN VAIN THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE COMMANDMENTS OF MEN.’ “

f. He rebuked His listeners for their ignorance of the Scriptures.

Mat 22:29 Jesus answered and said to them, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God.

Mat 21:42 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: ‘THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED HAS BECOME THE CHIEF CORNERSTONE. THIS WAS THE LORD’S DOING, AND IT IS MARVELOUS IN OUR EYES’ ?

g. He placed the Word of God above Mary,His mother and His miracles.

Luk 11:27 And it happened, as He spoke these things, that a certain woman from the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, “Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts which nursed You!”

Luk 11:28 But He said, “More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”

Luk 16:29 Abraham said to him, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’

Luk 16:30 And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’

Luk 16:31 But he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.’ “

h. For Christ Scripture Alone was the arbiter(judge) for every dispute i.e. argument.

Mat 22:29 Jesus answered and said to them, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God.

Mat 22:30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven.

Mat 22:31 But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying,

Mat 22:32 ‘I AM THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, THE GOD OF ISAAC, AND THE GOD OF JACOB’ ? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”

g. The Lord did not criticize, oppose, demean, set aside, or add to Scripture as His opponents. He believed all of it, obeyed all of it and dedicated His life to the fulfillment of Scripture.

Mat 5:17 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.

3. Christ Alone: Christ believed that His cross/work alone provided salvation. He did not believe it was His obedience unto death plus the obedience of man that provided salvation.

Joh 19:30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.

Joh 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

Joh 8:24 Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”

Joh 8:58 Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.”

Joh 8:46 Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me?

Joh 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

1Ti 2:5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus,

1Ti 2:6 who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time,

1Ti 2:7 for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle—I am speaking the truth in Christ and not lying—a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

It is His propitiation alone, His redemption alone, and His reconciliation alone that provided and accomplished our so great salvation.

4. Grace Alone: Christ believed that it was the sovereign grace of God alone that saves sinners. He did not teach a grace plus works message.

Joh 6:37 All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.

Joh 6:44 No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day.

Joh 6:65 And He said, “Therefore I have said to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father.”

Joh 5:21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will.

Luk 18:10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.

Luk 18:11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector.

Luk 18:12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.’

Luk 18:13 And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’

Luk 18:14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Mat 9:13 But go and learn what this means: ‘I DESIRE MERCY AND NOT SACRIFICE.’ For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”

Rom 3:10 As it is written: “THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NO, NOT ONE;

Rom 3:11 THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS; THERE IS NONE WHO SEEKS AFTER GOD.

Luk 19:10 for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

Mat 1:21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.”

Isa 53:11 He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities.

Rom 11:5 Even so then, at this present time there is a remnant according to the election of grace.

Rom 11:6 And if by grace, then it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace. But if it is of works, it is no longer grace; otherwise work is no longer work.

5. Faith Alone: Our Lord taught us that it was belief alone in His finished work alone that saves our sinful souls. He did not teach belief plus discipleship for salvation.

Joh 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

Joh 3:18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Joh 3:36 He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

Joh 6:40 And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”

Joh 6:47 Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life.

Joh 6:29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”

Joh 8:24 Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”

Rom 4:5 But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness,

Rom 4:6 just as David also describes the blessedness of the man to whom God imputes righteousness apart from works:

Over 150 times the Scripture states there is only one condition for salvation and that is BELIEF ALONE!

1Jn 5:13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life,

6. To the Glory of God Alone:  The Lord Jesus life, death and resurrection was for the glory of God alone.  It was not for God’s glory plus man’s glory.

Joh 8:50 And I do not seek My own glory; there is One who seeks and judges.

Joh 17:4 I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.

Heb 1:3 who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

2Co 4:6 For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Heb 10:7 THEN I SAID, ‘BEHOLD, I HAVE COME— IN THE VOLUME OF THE BOOK IT IS WRITTEN OF ME— TO DO YOUR WILL, O GOD.’ ”

Rom 15:7 Therefore receive one another, just as Christ also received us, to the glory of God.

Rom 16:27 to God, alone wise, be glory through Jesus Christ forever. Amen.

Eph 3:21 to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
