What is the Philosophy of a Free Society?

Audio link

Can you provide either a coherent foundation for a free society or a coherent description of a free society?

We cannot defend the principle of freedom because we do not know the contents of freedom.

Jesus said in John 8:32

Joh 8:32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

It is so tragic that we are living in a country where we are losing our freedoms every day and moving toward totalitarianism and we do not have leaders that are teaching us the nature of freedom or how to defend it or maintain it.

You will never learn about God’s philosophy of freedom in an American school system.

Purpose: To learn from Scripture the Philosophy of a Free Society

  1. We started a series titled, “The Five Fundamentals of Christianity”.  These five fundamentals are:

(1) Scripture Alone (2) Christ Alone (3) Grace Alone (4) Faith Alone (5) To the Glory of God Alone

We want to look at Scripture Alone today as the foundation on which a free society is created.

The first question for every leader of a free society to ask is, “What is truth?”

This is the first principle of every society. Every person and every nation presupposes the reliability of some philosophical system as their foundation for truth and knowledge.

In philosophy this first system of thought is called epistemology. Which asks the question, How do you know?

Epistemology is concerned with the theory of knowledge. Epistemology is the first branch of philosophy and the most important branch because it defines the meaning of each preceding branch of philosophy.

The five branches of philosophy are (1) Epistemology (2) Metaphysics (3) Ethics (4) Politics and (5) Economics.

If a societies epistemology is based of empiricism or rationalism then that society is headed for anarchy or totalitarianism, necessarily so.

  1. What is the Philosophy of a Free Society??

(1)Epistemology: Propositional  Revelation

(2)Soteriology: Faith Alone

(3)Metaphysics: Theism

(4)Ethics:  Divine Law

(5)Politics: Constitutional Republic

(6)Economics: Biblical Choices

  1. Translating those ideas into more familiar language, we might say:

(1)Epistemology: The Bible tells me so

(2)Soteriology: Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved

(3)Metaphysics: In Him we live and move and have our being.

(4)Ethics: We ought to obey God rather than men.

(5)Politics: Proclaim liberty throughout the land.

(6)Economics: Direct my steps according to Your Word and let no iniquity have dominion over me.

  1. There are only two systems of thought from which a society can choose to govern its thoughts, words and actions.

The spirit of truth or the spirit of error these are the two systems of thought.

1Jn 4:6  We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

  1. Empiricism and Rationalism are the spirit of error.

In 1 John 4:6 the word error does not mean mistake but rather deceit or a leading astray. These subjective human viewpoint systems of thought are purposively

designed to deceive man and to lead him astray into slavery.

Isa 5:13  Therefore my people have gone into captivity, Because they have no knowledge; Their honorable men are famished, And their multitude dried up with thirst.

Hos 4:6  My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me;

Because you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.

Hos 4:7  “The more they increased, The more they sinned against Me; I will change their glory into shame.

Hos 4:8  They eat up the sin of My people; They set their heart on their iniquity.

Hos 4:9  And it shall be: like people, like priest. So I will punish them for their ways, And reward them for their deeds.

Hos 4:10  For they shall eat, but not have enough; They shall commit harlotry, but not increase; Because they have ceased obeying the LORD.

Hos 4:11  “Harlotry, wine, and new wine enslave the heart.

Hos 4:12  My people ask counsel from their wooden idols, And their staff informs them. For the spirit of harlotry has caused them to stray,

And they have played the harlot against their God.

2Co 11:1  Oh, that you would bear with me in a little folly—and indeed you do bear with me.

2Co 11:2  For I am jealous for you with godly jealousy. For I have betrothed you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.

2Co 11:3  But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

2Co 11:4  For if he who comes preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, orif you receive a different spirit which you have not received,

or a different gospel which you have not accepted—you may well put up with it!

  1. Christianity offers the only philosophy for a free society because it alone possesses the only objective system of truth to guarantee freedom.

And that system of truth is the Word of God. The Word of God alone is truth. The word of man is subjective and therefore incapable of producing freedom.

Steven McAvoy states that, Truth is a matter of fact, not our feelings. Truth is objective because God exists outside of our feelings.

It is universal because God stands outside of all that exists. Only His existence is independent.

McDowell and Bob Hostetler discuss this needed understanding for the twenty-first century: It is impossible to arrive at an objective, universal,

and constant standard of truth and morality without bringing God onto the stage. If an objective standard of truth and morality exists,

it cannot be the product of the human mind(or it will not be objective); it must be the product of another Mind.

If a constant and unchanging truth exists, it must reach beyond the human timelines (or it would not be constant); it must be eternal.

If a universal rule of right and wrong exists, it must be above us all. Yet, absolute truth must be something – or Someone- that is common to

all humanity, to all creation. … it is God’s nature and character that defines truth. He defines what is right for all people, for all times, for all places.

But truth is not something He decides; it is something He is.”

Psa 31:5  Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me,O LORD God of truth.

  1. God’s truth must be believed and accepted as truth because He alone is the God of all truth.

He alone is the only objective, independent source of all truth. Likewise, God’s Word demands that we accept His Word as the truth

and obey it as the truth because to reject His Word as the truth is to call Him a liar. When a person rejects God’s objective Word as the source

of all truth then they will establish their subjective lies as their source of truth. This exchange DVP for HVP carries with it certain inevitable destructive consequences.

The first is intellectual suicide, there is no longer a love for the truth or pursuit of the truth as the epistemological criterion to discern truth from error.

Man’ subjective mind through the deception of  empiricism and rationalism adulterates every department of learning for the glory and exaltation of man’s pride.

The satanic purpose in this educational system is to keep man’s mind in darkness through the deception that he thinks that he is always learning; however, in this intellectual blindness he never comes to the knowledge of the truth.  The next consequence of HVP is moral degradation .

Once man abandons God’s objective, absolute standard for truth there is no reason for moral responsibility.

Because if morals are a product of man’s opinion then one man’s opinion of right and wrong is just as good as another’s

and the conclusion of this thinking is anarchy or totalitarianism.  The preceding consequence naturally leads to the loss of all liberty.

Where there is no truth – there is no freedom.

Just like the abandonment of God’s truth always results in the abandonment of morality similarly the rejection of God’s truth always leads to slavery.
