The Five Fundamentals of Christianity

Truth is a system of thought. To understand Christianity and to grow in Christ a Christian must think like Christ, systematically and systemically. The five fundamentals of Christianity provide a Christian with a biblical framework to begin organizing their minds under a doctrinal hierarchy of thought. A Christian’s discernment is only as sound as the system from which they reason. If their system of thought is a confounded, comingling of human viewpoint and divine viewpoint then their judgment will be unsound, their minds will be confused and they will be unwittingly led by Satan.

Purpose: To learn the five fundamentals of Christianity in order to think like Christ and to live like Christ to the glory of God.

1. Scripture Alone—2. Christ Alone 3. Grace Alone 4. Faith Alone 5. The Glory of God Alone — The order is highly instructive and the qualifying word ‘Alone’ is of monumental significance. In the order God tells us where to begin our thinking and why we are to begin with Scripture and why we are not to begin with any other starting point. The word ‘Alone’ in each of the five fundamentals’ begins the godly process of separating in our minds God’s truth from Satan’s error.

1. Scripture Alone—

(a) The first principle of Christianity is the Word of God Alone is Truth. God wants His children to trust His Word alone as the sole object of their belief and practice. God wants us to presuppose the reliability of Scripture alone for all things that pertain to life and godliness. Which axiom shall reason serve? Revelation? Empiricism? Rationalism?

Mat 7:24 “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock:

Mat 7:25 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.

Mat 7:26 “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand:

Mat 7:27 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”

2Pe 1:3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue,

2Pe 1:4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

2Ti 3:16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,

2Ti 3:17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

(1) A Christian must rid his mind of all of Satan’s false systems of truth i.e. Empiricism and Rationalism. We are not to think in terms of Scripture Plus any additions to make up for anything that Scripture lacks. Scripture is all sufficient.

Col 2:3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

Deu 4:2 You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.

Pro 30:6 Do not add to His words, Lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar.

1Co 4:6 Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes, that you may learn in us not to think beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up on behalf of one against the other.

Rev 22:18 For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book;

Rev 22:19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

1Th 2:13 For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe.

Joh 18:38 Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, “I find no fault in Him at all. Christ was asked the most important epistemological question by Pilate: What is truth?

Joh 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

Christ was not searching for the truth He was and eternally remains the TRUTH itself.

Joh 17:17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.

Psa 31:5 Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me, O LORD God of truth.

2Pe 1:19 And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts;

2Pe 1:20 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation,

2Pe 1:21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

Christ did not integrate the ideas of Socrates, Plato, or Aristotle with the Word of God. Why not? Because He believed that the Word of God alone is truth. God’s Word has a monopoly on truth. There is no multi-source theory of truth and knowledge taught in the Word of God. The Scripture was Christ sole authority and sufficiency. He was a Scripturalist.

Mat 12:3 But He said to them, Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him:

Mat 12:5 Or have you not read in the law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, and are blameless?

Mat 19:4 And He answered and said to them, Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE,’

Mat 22:31 But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying,

Mar 12:26 But concerning the dead, that they rise, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the burning bush passage, how God spoke to him, saying, ‘I AM THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, THE GOD OF ISAAC, AND THE GOD OF JACOB’ ?

Luk 6:3 But Jesus answering them said, Have you not even read this, what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him:

Mat 7:28 And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching,

Mat 7:29 for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

He did not need to supplement it with any other source. Because the Word is perfect. What is more certain than a word from God? We do not need the uncertainty of man’s observations i.e. science, psychology, or experiences to fill in the gaps in our knowledge.

Pro 22:17 Incline your ear and hear the words of the wise, And apply your heart to my knowledge;

Pro 22:18 For it is a pleasant thing if you keep them within you; Let them all be fixed upon your lips,

Pro 22:19 So that your trust may be in the LORD; I have instructed you today, even you.

Pro 22:20 Have I not written to you excellent things Of counsels and knowledge,

Pro 22:21 That I may make you know the certainty of the words of truth, That you may answer words of truth To those who send to you?

Psa 12:6 The words of the LORD are pure words, Like silver tried in a furnace of earth, Purified seven times. Christ taught that Scripture cannot be proven to be false.

Joh 10:35 If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken),

This means that the Word of God is infallible and inerrant. Infallibility means that the Scripture is without defect—it cannot err.  Inerrancy signifies that Scripture is free from all and any errors.  It does not err. Dr. Crampton states that the Scriptures are unimpeachable; they cannot rationally be contradicted, violated, disregarded, or opposed.

Psa 119:160 The entirety of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever.

God’s Word is truth because He thinks it so.

All of God’s statements about history and science are truth i.e. knowledge. The written Word of God is the only justification of all knowledge. What is knowledge? Knowledge is the knowledge of the truth. God’s Word is a whole view of things thought out together. A self consistent system of thought. The only intellectually defensible system of thought on the planet.

The Word is self-authenticating, self-validating, and self-evidencing. If it needed something outside of itself to authenticate its truthfulness then whatever authenticates the Bible becomes more authoritative than the Scripture.

(2) Satan does not want man to know God’s Word because it Alone exposes his lies and sets man free.

Joh 8:32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

Joh 8:44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.

1Jn 4:6 We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

Isa 8:20 To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

Psa 119:130 The entrance of Your words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple.

Isa 5:13 Therefore my people have gone into captivity, Because they have no knowledge; Their honorable men are famished, And their multitude dried up with thirst.

1Ti 6:20 O Timothy! Guard what was committed to your trust, avoiding the profane and idle babblings and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge—

1Ti 6:21 by professing it some have strayed concerning the faith. Grace be with you. Amen.

Heb 4:12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Heb 5:14 But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Satan knows that only the doctrine of Scripture Alone honors God and gives Him glory. He knows that all the other false claims of knowledge that he has thought up blasphemes God’s claim that He alone has all knowledge, all truth and all wisdom because He alone is all knowledge and all truth and all wisdom.  God alone reveals knowledge through His Word. Truth is a gift from God to His people. The human mind will never create a system of knowledge. Because man is not God; he is not all knowing.

Mat 16:16 Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

Mat 16:17 Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.

Joh 6:63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.

Joh 6:68 But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.

We have a finished Word about a finished Work the Cross/Work of the Lord Jesus Christ who is THE WORD OF GOD- HIMSELF!
