One God and Three Persons

One God and Three Persons:
Believe it or goto Hell

Sermon Online – 5/2/10

There is nothing more basic to Christianity than the doctrine of the Holy trinity.

If you reject the Scriptural doctrine of the trinity then you are not a Christian and are in danger of burning in hell for all of eternity. Hence, that is why I chose the title of the sermon. Moreover, to deny the Biblical doctrine of the trinity is to blaspheme the very nature of God and to supplant His cogent, clear revelation about His tri-personal Being with deceptive, damnable, man-made imaginations about God. More specifically, to reject the trinity is to reject the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ. And if Christ is not God Almighty from all of eternity as a distinct Person from God the Father then there can be no salvation for anyone.

Why? It is because the Scripture unequivocally states that the God/Man is the only mediator between God the Father and man.

1Ti 2:5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus,

Consequently, it is of the upmost importance that Christians be able to define and defend this touchstone doctrine of Christianity. Today tens of thousands of people are being led astray by false preachers who deny the doctrine of the trinity. Christians that are ignorant of the Scriptures concerning the doctrine of the trinity cannot recognize a false statement about the trinity because they have never learned what the Scripture truly says about this fundamental doctrine.

Purpose: To discover the true definition of the doctrine of the Holy trinity and learn how to defend it against all error and recognize what constitutes a false presentation concerning the doctrine of the trinity.

1. The first century church recognized that which constituted “ the faith which was once for all delivered to the saint.” Jude 3

Act 2:42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.
Act 6:7 Then the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith.
Act 13:8 But Elymas the sorcerer (for so his name is translated) withstood them, seeking to turn the proconsul away from the faith.
Act 14:22 strengthening the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and saying, “We must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of God.”
Act 16:5 So the churches were strengthened in the faith, and increased in number daily.
1Co 16:13 Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong.
2Co 13:5 Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualified.
2Ti 3:8 Now as Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, disapproved concerning the faith;

Therefore, from its very beginning the Church was not inclusive but exclusive. It was closed to every false doctrine and open to only “the apostles’ teachings.”
Acts 2:42
Therefore, to contradict or depart from “the faith” was considered apostasy.
1Ti 4:1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons,

2. There was no religious pluralism in the first century Church.

If anyone contradicted the one true, orthodox faith they were called:

(1) False prophets- Matt. 7:15 (2) Savage wolves – Acts 20:29 (3) Deceitful workers and false apostles- II Cor. 11:13 (4) Ministers of Satan- II Cor.11:14-15 (5) Dogs and evil workers –Phil. 3:2 (6) False circumcism –Phil. 3:2 (7) Blasphemers –I Tim. 1:20 (8) Evil men and impostors- II Tim. 3:13 (9) Heretics –Tit. 3:10 (10) False teachers- II Pet.2:1 (11) Followers of deceitful spirits – I Tim. 4:1 (12) Liars –I John 2:22 (13) Antichrists –I John 2:22

“These “ heretics” were teaching doctrines which were in contradiction to an already established body of doctrines and which split the church ( Gal. 1:6-9).
You cannot contradict something that is not already established. The standard of rule by which a doctrine was accepted or rejected was “the apostles’ teachings.” This is what we mean by the “ orthodoxy of Scripture.” Whatever contradicts this rule is what we mean by “heresy.” Robert Morey, The Trinity- page 45.

The Holy Spirit also described the doctrines of these “false apostles” as: damnable heresies (II Pet. 2:1); a different gospel (Gal.1:6; II Cor. 11:4); a distorted gospel (Gal.1:7); perverse things (Acts 20:30); another Jesus (II Cor. 11:4); a different spirit (II Cor. 11:4); a different doctrine ( I Tim.6:3); opposing arguments of what is falsely called knowledge ( I Tim. 6:20).

3. A true definition of the Scriptural Holy Trinity.

A) There is in the Divine Being but one indivisible essence (ousia, essentia). B) In this one Divine Being there are three Persons or individual subsistences, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. C) The whole undivided essence of God belongs equally to each of the three persons. D) The subsistence and operation of the three persons in the divine Being is marked by a certain definite order. E) There are certain personal attributes by which the three persons are distinguished. F) The Church confesses the Trinity to be a mystery beyond the comprehension of man.

Louis Berkhof, Systematic Theology, (Grand Rapids: Wm. B. Eerdman’s Publishing Company, 1941) pgs. 87-89.

1Jn 5:7 For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one.

4. How to defend the doctrine of the Trinity.

The Oneness false ministers do not believe in the eternal, pre-existence of Christ or that He is a distinct eternal Person from God the Father that shares the same eternal essence of God the Father and God the Holy Spirit.

2Jn 1:9 Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son.
2Jn 1:10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him;
2Jn 1:11 for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds.

Joh 8:24 Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”

Joh 8:56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.”

Joh 8:57 Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?”
Joh 8:58 Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.”
Jesus use of the name I AM is in the present tense which signifies that He is ETERNAL!
Joh 8:59 Then they took up stones to throw at Him; Exo 3:13 Then Moses said to God, “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?”
Exo 3:14 And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ “

What is the source of all sound doctrine? The gospel.

1Ti 1:8 But we know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully,
1Ti 1:9 knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,
1Ti 1:10 for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine,
1Ti 1:11 according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to my trust.
According to these Scriptures sound doctrine flows out of the gospel. If you don’t believe that Jesus Christ is the eternal I AM of Ex. 3:14 then you don’t believe the gospel and you are going to burn in hell for eternity. All false ministers don’t know the gospel. They are all blind to the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Act 4:12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
Joe 2:32 And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the LORD Shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be deliverance, As the LORD has said, Among the remnant whom the LORD calls.

The Oneness heretics deny that Jesus and the Father are one in essence from all eternity. They teach that Jesus and the Father are one in Person and one in purpose but not one in essence.
Joh 10:30 I and My Father are one.”
ἐσμέν = we are =two distinct Persons= the diversity of Persons
Frist person plural indicative of G1510; we are: – are, be, have our being,

The Greek word for one is in the neuter while the words for Jesus and the Father are in the masculine. The neuter gender signifies one “thing” i.e. one nature, one in essence not one in purpose. Jesus was not saying that He and the Father were working together as one in purpose. The Jews would not have objected to that statement. However, the reason the Jews picked up stones to kill Jesus was because they understood precisely what Jesus meant His use of the word “one”. They knew that Christ was claiming to have the very same eternal, nature as God the Father. Christ was saying that the Father and I am one and the same thing. Hence, in their minds He had just committed blasphemy.

ἕν=one in substance =a unity of essence
(Including the neuter [etc.] ἕν hen); a primary numeral; one: – a (-n, -ny, certain),

Joh 10:31 Then the Jews took up stones again to stone Him.
Joh 10:32 Jesus answered them, “Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?”
Joh 10:33 The Jews answered Him, saying, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself God.”

“ Note how carefully both the diversity of the persons and the unity of the essence is expressed here. Jesus says, “I and the Father.” Hence, He clearly speaks about two persons. And this plurality is shown also by the verb ( one word in Greek) “we are” (ἐσμέν, esmen). These two persons never become one person. Hence, Jesus does not say,
“We are one person” (εἷς) i.e. masculine gender but the neuter gender signifying one in substance , but He says, “We are one substance (ἕν).” Though two persons, the two are one substance or essence.” Hendriksen, John page 126.

1Jn 5:7 For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one.

And these three are one thing i.e. one in essence not one in person. The Greek word for one again is the very same as the word for one found in John 10:30.

Mat 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
1Pe 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;
Jud 1:3 Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.
2Co 13:14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.
Act 20:29 For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock.
Act 20:30 Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves.
Act 20:31 Therefore watch, and remember that for three years I did not cease to warn everyone night and day with tears.
