How to Stand in Truth Alone
Our Lord taught us how to handle every problem that we will ever face in our lives by showing us how to stand in Truth alone. Contrary to Christ example, the world, the flesh and the devil offer us many false and deceptive ways to cope with our woes i.e. psychology, man’s philosophy, self-help programs, false religions. However, these anti-Christ systems always end in despair and only compound our problems, because these diabolical enemies represent the spirit of error and not the spirit of truth. The Scriptures alone reveal where we are to stand against all our enemies and how we are to stand which is by belief alone in the Word of God alone. The Word of God teaches us to stand in belief on His power, His promises and His victory and not to stand in doubt, worry and fear i.e. unbelief.
Purpose: To learn from Scripture how to claim your stand in Truth alone by belief alone to appropriate the victory of the cross/work of Christ in every area of your life.
1. When Christ fought the devil in the wilderness He reveled to us the supreme example of how to stand in the truth of God’s Word alone. This battle was a battle of thoughts. God’s thoughts i.e truth and Satan’s thoughts i.e. error. Evil is not a thing, evil is ungodly thinking. It is any want of conformity to God’s Word.
Mat 4:1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
Mat 4:2 And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry.
Mat 4:3 Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”
Mat 4:4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘MAN SHALL NOT LIVE BY BREAD ALONE, BUT BY EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS FROM THE MOUTH OF GOD.’ ”
Mat 4:5 Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple,
Mat 4:6 and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘HE SHALL GIVE HIS ANGELS CHARGE OVER YOU,’ and, IN THEIR HANDS THEY SHALL BEAR YOU UP, LEST YOU DASH YOUR FOOT AGAINST A STONE.’ ”
Mat 4:7 Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘YOU SHALL NOT TEMPT THE LORD YOUR GOD.’ ”
Mat 4:8 Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.
Mat 4:9 And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”
Mat 4:10 Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘YOU SHALL WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD, AND HIM ONLY YOU SHALL SERVE.’ ”
Our Lord did not stand in unbelief on His feelings or experiences or the deceptive word
of man but on the truth of the Word of God alone. He believed in the Scriptures because it alone is truth. We are Christians first and foremost because it is the truth and not because it works. The first thing you should want to know about a one hundred dollar bill is it authentic, a genuine one hundred dollar bill and not counterfeit. Counterfeit one hundred dollar bills work until they are proven to be false. However, because it works temporally does not mean that it is true.
Act 17:11 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. The NIV states, “Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.”
These Bereans did not search the philosophers of their day such as Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Democritus, Heraclitus or Epicurus. They searched the Scriptures Alone to see if what was being said was true because the Scriptures Alone are Truth. They knew that if what is being taught does not line up with Scripture then it is not truth and therefore it MUST be rejected. They were Scripturalist and not integrationist.
Exo 7:10 So Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh, and they did so, just as the LORD commanded. And Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh and before his servants, and it became a serpent.
Exo 7:11 But Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers; so the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchantments.
Exo 7:12 For every man threw down his rod, and they became serpents. But Aaron’s rod swallowed up their rods.
AA works but it does not mean that it is true. Satan systems work but it does not mean that they are true. Buddhism’s eight fold path of right living works for many Buddhist however, it is false.
Col 2:23 These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion,(will worship) false humility, and neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh (the sin nature).
2. Our Savior believed that it was the Word of God alone that would protect Him against everything that Satan could throw at Him.
Mat 4:11 Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.
Our Lord knew that the devil would eventually lose the battle and leave Him. Why? Because God’s truth always defeats Satan’s lies, God’s truth is light and darkness must retreat in the presence of light.
Psa 119:130 The entrance of Your words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple.
1Jn 1:5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.
Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Gen 1:2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
Gen 1:3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.
Gen 1:4 And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness.
Joh 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
Joh 9:5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
Joh 12:36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.”
Joh 12:46 I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness.
Act 26:18 to open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.’
Rom 13:11 And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed.
Rom 13:12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.
2Co 4:4 whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.
2Co 4:6 For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
Eph 5:8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light 1Pe 2:9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 1Th 5:5 You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness.
Rev 21:23 The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light.
Rev 22:5 There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever.
Moreover, God’s Word is all powerful and Satan’s lying words are not.
Heb 4:12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
2Ch 20:6 and said: “O LORD God of our fathers, are You not God in heaven, and do You not rule over all the kingdoms of the nations, and in Your hand is there not power and might, so that no one is able to withstand You?
3. Now how do we stand in the light of His all powerful Word against all our enemies? By belief alone in His Word alone.
Joh 11:21 Now Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.
Joh 11:22 But even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.”
Joh 11:23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
Joh 11:24 Martha said to Him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”
Joh 11:25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.
Joh 11:26 And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
Joh 11:27 She said to Him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”
Rom 4:19 And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb.
Rom 4:20 He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God,
Rom 4:21 and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform.
Heb 4:2 For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it.
We must believe God’s Word and not the word of our blasphemous natures, or the lying words of Satan or the false ideas of this fallen world. 1Jn 3:20 For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.
1Jn 4:4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
4. We stand in belief alone in what our Lord has done by defeating all three of our enemies. We have no power within us to defeat our enemies.
2Ch 20:12 O our God, will You not judge them? For we have no power against this great multitude that is coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are upon You.”
1Jn 3:8 He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil
Col 2:15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.
Joh 16:33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
Rom 6:6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.
5. Give me an example of how we are to do battle with Satan.
Eph 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.
Eph 6:11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
Eph 6:12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
Eph 6:13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Eph 6:14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
Eph 6:15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
Eph 6:16 above all, taking the shield of faith (by belief alone in God’s Word alone) with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
Eph 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
Jas 4:7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
Jas 4:8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
1Pe 5:6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time,
1Pe 5:7 casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.
1Pe 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
1Pe 5:9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.
Col 2:6 As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him,
Rom 6:6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.
Rom 6:7 For he who has died has been freed from sin.
Rom 6:8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him,
Rom 6:9 knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him.
Rom 6:10 For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God.
Rom 6:11 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
1Th 5:24 He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it. Mat 6:31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’
Mat 6:32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.
Mat 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
Mat 6:34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
2Ch 20:15 And he said, “Listen, all you of Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem, and you, King Jehoshaphat! Thus says the LORD to you: ‘Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s.
2Ch 20:17 You will not need to fight in this battle. Position yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of the LORD, who is with you, O Judah and Jerusalem!’ Do not fear or be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them, for the LORD is with you.”
2Ch 20:20 So they rose early in the morning and went out into the Wilderness of Tekoa; and as they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Hear me, O Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem: Believe in the LORD your God, and you shall be established; believe His prophets, and you shall prosper.”
Psa 71:6 By You I have been upheld from birth; You are He who took me out of my mother’s womb. My praise shall be continually of You.
Psa 71:7 I have become as a wonder to many, But You are my strong refuge.
Psa 71:8 Let my mouth be filled with Your praise And with Your glory all the day.
Psa 143:8 Cause me to hear Your lovingkindness in the morning, For in You do I trust; Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, For I lift up my soul to You.
Isa 46:3 “Listen to Me, O house of Jacob, And all the remnant of the house of Israel, Who have been upheld by Me from birth, Who have been carried from the womb:
Isa 46:4 Even to your old age, I am He, And even to gray hairs I will carry you! I have made, and I will bear; Even I will carry, and will deliver you.
