How to Renew Your Mind

What is it that Satan wants control of? Your mind!  What does the Holy Spirit want to dominate? Your mind! Where is the Christian life lived? In your mind! What does the Bible say about your thoughts? That you are your thoughts! Where does belief and unbelief take place? In your mind! Evil and good are mental ideas. Love, joy and peace are mental and not emotional in nature. Jesus stated that adultery was first of all committed in the mind of a person before they physically commit the sin.

Mat 5:28 But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

The book of Proverbs teaches us the monumental importance of being in control of our thought life.

Pro 4:23  Keep your heart (mind) with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.

The quality of your life and stability of your soul is all based on the kinds of thoughts that you believe moment by moment.

Purpose: To learn for Scripture how to renew our minds and bring every thought in to  the obedience of Christ.

Rom 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.

Rom 12:2  And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Rom 12:3  For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.

Paul states that the presentment of our bodies as living sacrifices is our reasonable

( intelligent, rational) service. Everything about Christianity is logical and intelligible.

And the logic behind this is because the God of Scripture is not insane. His mind is eternal, uncaused, immutable truth, reason, logic and intelligible omniscience. All His thoughts and actions are wise. It is impossible for Him to think or act irrationality. God is rationality.

How to Renew Your Mind

1. We must begin the renewal with a Christ-centered focus. Our justification is related to Him and so is our sanctification.

Col 2:6 As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him,

2. Belief in our union with Christ as related to our three enemies, the world, the flesh and the devil, is critical for protection from evil thoughts and growth in the mind of Christ.

The World:

Joh 16:33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

1Jn 5:4  For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.

The Flesh:

Rom 6:6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.

Rom 6:7  For he who has died has been freed from sin.

Rom 6:8  Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him,

Rom 6:9  knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him.

Rom 6:10  For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God.

Rom 6:11  Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Rom 6:12  Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts.

The Devil:

Col 2:15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.

1Jn 3:8  He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.

1Jn 4:4  You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

Jas 4:7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

1Pe 5:8  Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

1Pe 5:9  Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.

Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.”

Eph 6:16  above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.

3. As we focus on the Lord Jesus Christ in the Word so that the Holy Spirit conforms our mind to the image of the resurrected Christ.

2Co 3:18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.

Gal 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

Col 3:3  For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

Col 3:4 When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.

4. We must confess our sins and live in a constant state of repentance.

1Jn 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Num 32:23  But if you do not do so, then take note, you have sinned against the LORD; and be sure your sin will find you out.

5. We must ask God to cause us to hate and forsake the sin that so easily  ensnares us and to cause us to obey His Word.

Heb 12:1 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,

Eph 4:27 nor give place to the devil.

Psa 51:10  Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.

Psa 119:35  Make me walk in the path of Your commandments, For I delight in it.

Psa 119:36  Incline my heart to Your testimonies, And not to covetousness.

Psa 119:88  Revive me according to Your lovingkindness, So that I may keep the testimony of Your mouth.

Psa 119:133  Direct my steps by Your word, And let no iniquity have dominion over e.

Psa 119:154  Plead my cause and redeem me; Revive me according to Your word.

Psa 119:167  My soul keeps Your testimonies, And I love them exceedingly.
