How to be Happy over the Holidays
Intro. Many people have a difficult time during the holidays for various reasons. Some people try to capture a feeling from the past. Others miss relationships that they once had. And others know that things are not the way they should be but wish that they could be different. Therefore, these reasons and a host of others tend to depress people over the holidays. Only God’s Word has the answer for these common problems and provides us with the happiness that we long for in our lives.
Purpose: To learn from Scripture the cure for all unhappiness and to learn how to help others when they are hurting and down during the holidays.
(1) Satan wants our minds to stay stuck in a mental quagmire of deceptive idolatry. He wants us to seek happiness in the creature and not in the Creator. Satan knows that if he can keep our minds focused on trying to find happiness in our feelings, in our relationships, or trying to recapture something from the past that we will be out of fellowship with Christ.
(2) God has designed our souls so that only He can give us the answer to every longing of our heart. God is dedicated to crushing our idols and making Himself the only God that we serve and worship because He is a Jealous God.
Jer 10:1 Hear the word which the LORD speaks to you, O house of Israel.
Jer 10:2 Thus says the LORD: “Do not learn the way of the Gentiles; Do not be dismayed at the signs of heaven, For the Gentiles are dismayed at them.
Jer 10:3 For the customs of the peoples are futile; For one cuts a tree from the forest, The work of the hands of the workman, with the ax.
Jer 10:4 They decorate it with silver and gold; They fasten it with nails and hammers So that it will not topple.
Jer 10:5 They are upright, like a palm tree, And they cannot speak; They must be carried, Because they cannot go by themselves. Do not be afraid of them, For they cannot do evil, Nor can they do any good.”
Jer 10:6 Inasmuch as there is none like You, O LORD (You are great, and Your name is great in might),
Jer 10:7 Who would not fear You, O King of the nations? For this is Your rightful due. For among all the wise men of the nations, And in all their kingdoms, There is none like You.
Jer 10:8 But they are altogether dull-hearted and foolish; A wooden idol is a worthless doctrine.
Jer 10:9 Silver is beaten into plates; It is brought from Tarshish, And gold from Uphaz, The work of the craftsman And of the hands of the metalsmith; Blue and purple are their clothing; They are all the work of skillful men.
Jer 10:10 But the LORD is the true God; He is the living God and the everlasting King. At His wrath the earth will tremble, And the nations will not be able to endure His indignation.
Jer 10:11 Thus you shall say to them: “The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth shall perish from the earth and from under these heavens.”
Jer 10:12 He has made the earth by His power, He has established the world by His wisdom, And has stretched out the heavens at His discretion.
Jer 10:13 When He utters His voice, There is a multitude of waters in the heavens: “And He causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth. He makes lightning for the rain, He brings the wind out of His treasuries.”
Jer 10:14 Everyone is dull-hearted, without knowledge; Every metalsmith is put to shame by an image; For his molded image is falsehood, And there is no breath in them.
Jer 10:15 They are futile, a work of errors; In the time of their punishment they shall perish.
Jer 10:16 The Portion of Jacob is not like them, For He is the Maker of all things, And Israel is the tribe of His inheritance; The LORD of hosts is His name.
Exo 34:14 (for you shall worship no other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God),
(3) We must learn that nothing is the way as it was for man in the Garden of Eden. Sin has destroyed all that was good on God’s earth. Everything is messed up! However, the good news is that the Lord uses all of our frustrations and sins and longings to drive us to Him to show us that He alone is our source of peace, our happiness, our joy, our strength and our portion forever.
Psa 73:25 Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You.
Psa 73:26 My flesh and my heart fail; But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Psa 119:57 You are my portion, O LORD; I have said that I would keep Your words.
Lam 3:24 “The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I hope in Him!”
Job 1:21 And he said: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, And naked shall I return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; Blessed be the name of the LORD.”
(4) How to always be happy biblically which has nothing to do with how you feel or your circumstanses.
(a) Focus on three past events:
1. The Father chose you in eternity past. That should make you happy.
Eph 1:4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love,
2Th 2:13 But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth,
Joh 6:37 All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.
2. The Lord Jesus Christ paid the full price for your sin debt in the past. That should make you very happy.
Rom 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
Rom 3:21 But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets,
Rom 3:22 even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference;
Rom 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Rom 3:24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
Rom 3:25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed,
Rom 3:26 to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
Rom 3:27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith.
Rom 3:28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law.
3. The third past event was when God caused you to believe the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. When you are down meditate on this truth( not feeling) and this truth from God’s Word through the filling of the Holy Spirit will make you happy.
Act 13:48 Now when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and glorified the word of the Lord. And as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed.
Joh 6:47 Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life.
Joh 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
(b) Next, where does God want your mind to be focused in the present. God does not want us to be stuck in the past but to focus on the future with Him in Christ.
Php 3:7 But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ.
Php 3:8 Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ
Php 3:9 and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith;
Php 3:10 that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death,
Php 3:11 if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.
Php 3:12 Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me.
Php 3:13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead,
Php 3:14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Php 3:15 Therefore let us, as many as are mature, have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal even this to you.
Php 3:16 Nevertheless, to the degree that we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us be of the same mind.
Php 3:17 Brethren, join in following my example, and note those who so walk, as you have us for a pattern.
Php 3:18 For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ:
Php 3:19 whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame—who set their mind on earthly things.
Php 3:20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,
Php 3:21 who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.
© Therefore, He wants us not to be depressed but to rejoice in Him, in Who He is and what He has done for us and the future He has prepared for us. And not to worry but to give all of our moment by moment anxiety to Him.
Joh 14:1 “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.
Joh 14:2 In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
Joh 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.
Joh 15:11 “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.
Php 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!
Php 4:5 Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand.
Php 4:6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;
Php 4:7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Php 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.
Psa 37:4 Delight yourself also in the LORD, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Pro 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding;
Pro 3:6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.
Mat 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
Mat 6:34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
Mat 28:9 And as they went to tell His disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, “Rejoice!” So they came and held Him by the feet and worshiped Him.
