There is so much confusion about the filling of the Holy Spirit today. Many emphasize that a person must speak in tongues in order to be filled with the Spirit. There is little understanding concerning what the Bible says about how to be filled.

Purpose: To learn from Scripture what it means to be filled with the Spirit and how to continually walk in the Spirit.

1. First of all we are commanded to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Eph 5:18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit,

(a) be filled—present tense, passive voice, imperative mood

(b) The Greek word plaroo means to fill, to make full, to fill up,

to fill up a deficiency, to pervade, to influence fully, to possess fully,

to dominate.

2. The Spirit’s work is to glorify Christ and not to speak of Himself.

Joh 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

Joh 16:14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

The message of the church is not the Spirit, the Spirit but Christ, His Person and His cross work and His resurrected life and His second coming.

1Co 1:23 but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness,

2Co 4:5 For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus’ sake.

Gen 24:1 Now Abraham was old, well advanced in age; and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things.

Gen 24:2 So Abraham said to the oldest servant of his house, who ruled over all that he had, “Please, put your hand under my thigh,

Gen 24:3 and I will make you swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell;

3. Therefore, to be filled with the Spirit is to be occupied with Christ through the Word. Because the work of the Holy Spirit is to conform us to Christ likeness.

2Co 3:18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.

Rom 8:29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.

Gal 4:19 My little children, for whom I labor in birth again until Christ is formed in you,

Eph 4:13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;

Php 3:10 that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death,

Col 1:28 Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus.

David wanted to be like Christ.

Psa 17:15 As for me, I will see Your face in righteousness; I shall be satisfied when I awake in Your likeness.

Job also longed to be like Christ and to see his Redeemer.

Job 19:25 For I know that my Redeemer lives, And He shall stand at last on the earth;

Job 19:26 And after my skin is destroyed, this I know, That in my flesh I shall see God,

Job 19:27 Whom I shall see for myself, And my eyes shall behold, and not another. How my heart yearns within me!

4. We must be constantly under the influence of the Word for the Holy Spirit to conform us to Christ resurrected image.

Joh 17:17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.

Col 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord

Joh 15:4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.

Joh 15:5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.

5. Why did Christ send the Holy Spirit?

Joh 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—

Joh 14:17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

Joh 14:18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.

Joh 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

Jesus sent another Helper of the same kind ( God the Holy Spirit ) to another teacher, comforter, and guide. He was saying the Holy Spirit will take My place and assume My role in My absence.

6. A little theology on the doctrine of the Holy Spirit

(a) The Holy Spirit is God. He is the third Person of the Holy trinity.

. Act 5:3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself?

Act 5:4 While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.”

(b) He is co-equal, co-eternal and co-glorious with God the Father and God the Son.

Heb 9:14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Mat 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

( c ) He is not the Person of the Father or the Person of the Son. He is a different Person with different personal attributes. He has a different office work from God the Father and God the Son.

(1) He is the Author of Holy Scripture.

2Pe 1:20 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation,

2Pe 1:21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

(2) He alone interprets Holy Scripture and illuminates our minds in Scripture and teaches us Scripture.

1Co 2:9 But as it is written: “EYE HAS NOT SEEN, NOR EAR HEARD, NOR HAVE ENTERED INTO THE HEART OF MAN THE THINGS WHICH GOD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIM.”

1Co 2:10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.

1Co 2:11 For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.

1Co 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.

1Co 2:13 These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

1Co 2:14 But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

1Co 2:15 But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one.

1Co 2:16 For “WHO HAS KNOWN THE MIND OF THE LORD THAT HE MAY INSTRUCT HIM?” But we have the mind of Christ.

1Jn 2:20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things.

1Jn 2:27 But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.

(3) The Holy Spirit’s work in our lives when we were first saved.

(aa) Think of RIBS as a memory aid. Regeneration- He gives us our new life in Christ.

Joh 6:63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life. He takes you out of Satan’s kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light. Life from death. Col. 1:13

(bb) He indwells us at the moment of salvation forever.

Joh 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—

(cc) He baptizes us into Christ. He places into Christ forever.

1Co 12:13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.

(dd) He seals us forever.

Eph 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

Since the Holy Spirit has done the most difficult work in our lives in the past is there now anything to hard for Him to handle?

Gen 18:14 Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.”

(4) The Holy Spirit’s work in our lives in the present.

(aa) Fills us. Ephs. 5:18

(bb) Glorifies Christ. John 16:14

(cc) Strengthens us to do battle against Satan. Ephs. 3:16

Eph 3:16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man,

Eph 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;

(dd) Sanctifies us. 11 Cor. 3:18 which includes discipline. Hebs. 12:6

(ee) Creates God’s love in our hearts. Roms. 5:5

(ff) Creates fellowship with the Father, Abba Father. Roms. 8:15,16

(gg) Leads us into truth. John 16:13

Joh 16:13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

2Ti 3:16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,

2Ti 3:17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

2Pe 1:3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue,

2Pe 1:4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

1Ti 6:20 O Timothy! Guard what was committed to your trust, avoiding the profane and idle babblings and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge—

1Ti 6:21 by professing it some have strayed concerning the faith. Grace be with you. Amen.

(hh) He gives us spiritual gifts. I Cor. 12:4-11

(ii) He produces His fruit in us.

Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

Gal 5:23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.

(jj) He intercedes for us.

Rom 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

(5) The Holy Spirit’s work in our lives in the future. Rom 8:11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

(6) Since He is a Person He can be grieved and quenched, resisted and blasphemed.

Eph 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

1Th 5:19 Do not quench the Spirit. Acts 7:51; Matt. 12:24-32

7. The Holy Spirit is our Advocate within us working against our sinful natures to make us holy as God is Holy.

. Gal 5:17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.

Gal 5:18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

Gal 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness,

Gal 5:20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies,

Gal 5:21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

1Pe 1:16 because it is written, “BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY.”

The Holy Spirit convicts us of our sins to cause us to confess our sins and hate our sins.

He wants us to consider ourselves dead to our old natures through Christ work and alive to God in Christ.

Rom 6:11 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Isa 11:2 The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.

Psa 143:10 Teach me to do Your will, For You are my God; Your Spirit is good. Lead me in the land of uprightness.

Isa 30:20 And though the Lord gives you The bread of adversity and the water of affliction, Yet your teachers will not be moved into a corner anymore, But your eyes shall see your teachers.

Isa 30:21 Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” Whenever you turn to the right hand Or whenever you turn to the left.

Gal 4:19 My little children, for whom I labor in birth again until Christ is formed in you,

Eph 4:13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;

Job 19:25 For I know that my Redeemer lives, And He shall stand at last on the earth;

Eph 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;

How To Be Filled With The Spirit

How to be Filled with the Spirit 12/6/09

For Audio goto Sermon Audio

Gen 24:3 and I will make you swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell;

3. Therefore, to be filled with the Spirit is to be occupied with Christ through the Word. Because the work of the Holy Spirit is to conform us to Christ likeness.

Eph 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;

How To Be Filled With The Spirit

How to be Filled with the Spirit 12/6/09

For Audio goto Sermon Audio

Gen 24:3 and I will make you swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell;

Eph 4:13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;

Job 19:25 For I know that my Redeemer lives, And He shall stand at last on the earth;
